Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!

Blog Post by R W Wakeley

It really is ten years since the first Mamma Mia was filmed!  This summer we see the release of the second film – Mamma Mia Here We Go Again.

The first film was mainly filmed around Greece (on the island of Skopelos) and although the second film is supposed to be on the fictional island of Kalokairi in Greece, it is in fact filmed on the beautiful Croatian island of Vis.

Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried and Colin Firth have all returned for the second film with Lily James joining the cast as the latest addition. Filming took 24 days and employed 270 local professionals. It was filmed in various locations across Vis, including the stunning beach in Stiniva.

The island of Vis is still relatively unknown as it was cut off to foreign visitors from the 1950’s up until 1989.  Due to it being used as a military base for the Yugoslave National Army, many of the locals fled the island and even today, the population is still low.  Hence, Vis remained underdeveloped and managed to retain its charm and beauty.

The island is blessed with a rugged coastline, lots of little coves and some stunning beaches. Vineyards can be seen across the island and Vis produces its own delicious white wine.

The little restaurants along the harbour wall and those dotted among the cobbled maze of side streets, serve some of the freshest fish and seafood that you will eat. A visit up to Fort George is a must too. The fort was built by the British in 1812 in an attempt to stop Napoleon’s advances in the Mediterranean. Visit the roof terrace for a drink and you really won’t be disappointed with the views.

Vis is only accessible by boat and there is no better way to see it than under your own sail! Discover More about Croatia Here!
